President Calvin Coolidge signed a proclamation in 1925 that Fire Prevention Week was to be observed Sunday to Saturday during the week of October 9th every year. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has been the sponsor of FPW since it began. Most people believe that FPW commemorates the Great Chicago Fire that burned from October 8-10,
