On the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 18 Poudre Fire Authority’s Investigator (BU-1) was called to assist CSU PD with a possible overcrowding issue at the Lory Student Center. The student center was hosting the regularly scheduled ASCSU hearings and experienced an unexpected and unusually large turn out. PFA enforces overcrowding issues for the safety of patrons and employees in assembly and other occupancies. Occupancies are assigned a Maximum Number of Occupants when they are built. This “Max Occ Load” number is created with calculations based on square footage, number of exits, and use of the area. When BU1 arrived it was determined that the room was well above its Max Occ Load. BU1 created and implemented a plan that allowed for the hearings to continue while safely mitigating the danger of overcrowding the room. Well before the hearings ended, the number of people in the area was brought below the Max Occ Load and the meeting continued as planned.
